Horse of the Year

My new-found, or rather, greatly increased, interest in the world of horses this year coincided with the amazing performances of two fabulous thoroughbreds - Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta. For those of you not familiar with the outstanding races turned in by these two horses, take a look at this article - or this one - that offer a brief point/counterpoint and just a glimpse of the much-discussed controversy: which of these two truly great horses, both undefeated in 2009 (and both female finalists, for the first time in history) should get "Horse of the Year" honors? The highly anticipated and hotly debated decision was announced tonight at the Eclipse Awards in California. Far be it from me to advise the horsemen; it's just exciting to see such a high level of interest - very good for the industry. And in case you missed it: Zenyatta was slated for retirement at the end of the year, but yesterday her owners announced that she's in fine form and will race another season, so maybe we'll see these two meet in 2010...?
